The director for a feature film based on a popular designer toy line has been named. Film company Sony Pictures has launched development of a feature film based on the Labubu toy series and has brought on director Paul King, known for the films Wonka and Paddington, to the project. The project is in the early stages of production, and King will serve not only as director but also as a producer on the picture alongside the studio Department M. Paul King's Experience and Success of Previous Projects Paul King's most recent directorial work was the film Wonka starring Timothée Chalamet. The film demonstrated solid commercial performance, grossing approximately $635 million worldwide. Previously, King directed the two Paddington films, which also achieved both box office success and critical acclaim. The combined box office for these films totals around $500 million. Furthermore, Paul King participated in the creation of the third installment of the Paddington franchise as a co-writer and executive producer, further solidifying his reputation as a director of family and fantasy films. What is Known About the Labubu Brand Labubu emerged about ten years ago and was initially presented as a series of illustrated books. Later, the character became the basis for a popular line of collectible toys, which are produced and distributed exclusively by the Chinese retailer Pop Mart. Labubu figures are sold in the format of so-called "blind boxes," where the buyer does not know in advance which specific character is inside the package. This sales method has become one of the key factors in the brand's popularity and has formed an active community of collectors around it. Creator of the Image and Artistic Foundation The creator of the Labubu image is artist Kasing Lung, who was born in Hong Kong and moved to the Netherlands as a child. His work is largely inspired by European and Asian folklore. Labubu is part of his authorial series "The Monsters," which unites several fantasy characters with a recognizable visual style. Details of the future film's plot, as well as the anticipated start date for filming, have not been disclosed at this time.
