BBC Developing New Series About Hercule Poirot Based on an Unfinished Story by Agatha Christie

BBC is officially developing a new television series centered on Hercule Poirot, bringing the legendary Belgian detective created by Agatha Christie back to screens in what is being described as a major long-term adaptation project.

According to industry reports, the series is now in the final stages of development and is already generating significant attention as one of the BBC’s most ambitious literary productions in years.

A Multi-Season Strategy From the Start
Insiders claim the BBC is approaching the project with a long-term vision already in place.

The plan reportedly includes at least three seasons, signaling strong confidence in the enduring popularity of Christie’s detective stories.

Production on the first season is expected to begin in summer 2026, with filming locations centered around Liverpool and northwestern England.

The premiere is currently targeted for the second half of 2027.

The scale of the launch suggests the BBC is aiming to re-establish Poirot as one of television’s defining mystery franchises for a new generation of viewers.

The Creative Team Behind the Series
The project will be produced by Mammoth Screen, a studio already experienced in adapting Agatha Christie’s work.

Its previous productions include And Then There Were None and Murder Is Easy.

Particular attention has been drawn to the involvement of Damien Timmer, founder of Mammoth Screen, who previously worked on the iconic Agatha Christie's Poirot starring David Suchet.

That ITV series ran for nearly 25 years and is still widely regarded as the definitive screen interpretation of Poirot.

The screenplay for the new adaptation is being written by Benji Walters, known for his work on the BBC drama Noughts + Crosses as well as the upcoming adaptation of Brideshead Revisited connected to Luca Guadagnino.

Sources suggest Walters has developed a more contemporary interpretation of Poirot while preserving the detective’s famous intellectual precision and distinctive charisma.

However, plot details remain tightly guarded.

The Search for a New Poirot Has Begun
Casting for Hercule Poirot is currently underway and is already being described as one of the most closely watched television casting decisions in recent years.

The character remains one of the most iconic figures in detective fiction, appearing in 33 novels and 51 short stories written by Agatha Christie.

Over the decades, Poirot has been portrayed by actors including:

  • David Suchet

  • John Malkovich

  • Kenneth Branagh

The challenge facing the BBC now is not simply finding a talented actor, but redefining one of literature’s most recognizable detectives for modern audiences without losing the qualities that made him timeless.

Why the Project Matters
The return of Poirot comes during a renewed global interest in classic detective fiction.

Recent adaptations of Christie’s work, along with the continued popularity of murder mysteries across streaming and television, have proven that audiences still strongly respond to carefully constructed whodunits driven by memorable investigators.

For the BBC, the project represents both a creative opportunity and a strategic investment in prestige television rooted in one of the most enduring literary brands ever created.

If successful, the new Poirot series could become one of the broadcaster’s flagship productions for years to come.
