Lena Headey Opens Up About Harassment in Hollywood and Toxic Fan Reactions

Game of Thrones star Lena Headey has spoken candidly about her experiences with powerful figures in Hollywood and the intense backlash she received from some fans, describing both as among the most difficult challenges of her career.

In a new interview, Lena Headey reflected on the issues that, in her view, many actresses faced in Hollywood for years. Best known for playing Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, Headey discussed how attitudes toward abuses of power have changed since the rise of the #MeToo movement and also recalled the wave of criticism she received from sections of the show's fanbase.

Headey Criticises a System That Protected Powerful Figures

According to Headey, one of Hollywood's biggest long-standing problems was the lack of accountability for influential individuals. She said that young actresses were often placed in particularly vulnerable positions because they depended on career opportunities and feared losing work.

Headey believes that this environment allowed some people within the industry to abuse their positions while others chose to ignore their behaviour. In her view, the actions of a single individual could negatively affect an entire production and create a toxic working atmosphere.

#MeToo Marked a Turning Point

The actress said the #MeToo movement helped many people recognize the true scale of the problem, making it clear that such experiences were far more common than many had previously realised.

Headey also believes younger actresses have benefited the most from the cultural shift. In her experience, the new generation is far more confident about setting personal boundaries and less willing to accept conditions that were once treated as standard industry practice.

She recalled that, at the beginning of her own career, there were often unspoken expectations surrounding intimate scenes. Headey described those expectations as degrading and welcomed the progress the industry has made in recent years.

Reflecting on the Game of Thrones Controversy

During the interview, Headey also revisited one of the most talked-about moments of her career—the infamous "Walk of Shame" sequence featuring Cersei Lannister in Season 5 of Game of Thrones.

The scene was filmed using a body double, with visual effects later used to merge Headey's face into the final sequence. After the episode aired, some viewers criticised the decision, arguing that they had been misled.

Headey admitted she was genuinely surprised by the intensity of the backlash. She said she was struck by how emotionally some fans reacted to what she considered a creative production decision. According to the actress, using body doubles has long been a standard practice in film and television, serving both artistic and practical purposes.
