AMC is working on a continuation of the "Ex-Presidents" gang story.

The cult crime action film from the early 1990s, Point Break, is getting a television continuation. Cable channel AMC has launched development on a series based on Kathryn Bigelow's film, betting not on a direct remake but on expanding the mythology of the original picture decades later.

The project is in its early stages, but according to insiders, AMC managed to secure the rights amid fierce competition from other studios. The script for the series is being handled by Dave Kalstein, known for his work on high-stakes television projects.

What is known about the new series

Joint production will be handled by Alcon Television Group and AMC Studios. Kalstein is not only writing the script but also serving as an executive producer alongside Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson—producers of the original film and the unsuccessful 2015 feature-length remake.

The creators emphasize that the series will not retell the plot of the classic film. Instead, the story will take on a life of its own, building upon the events of the cult movie.

Connection to the 1991 original

In the original 1991 film, directed from a script by W. Peter Iliff, young FBI agent Johnny Utah, played by Keanu Reeves, infiltrated a gang of surfers in Southern California. The criminal group, nicknamed the "Ex-Presidents," robbed banks wearing masks of former U.S. presidents. The gang's leader was the charismatic Bodhi, portrayed by Patrick Swayze.

The film became a cult classic thanks to its blend of action, a philosophy of freedom, and extreme sports, with the final scene on the crest of a deadly wave going down in cinematic history.

Plot and time jump

The series' action will take place roughly 35 years after the events of the film. At the center of the story will be a new, dangerous group of robbers somehow connected to the legacy of the "Ex-Presidents." The creators have not yet revealed whether this connection will be direct or more symbolic.

The series is expected to retain the spirit of the original—themes of risk, freedom, and alluring danger—but adapt them to modern realities and the multi-episode narrative format.

The team's experience and past reboot attempts

Dave Kalstein previously worked on series such as NCIS: Los Angeles, Quantico, and Treadstone, making him a logical choice for a project with a crime and action slant.

Recall that the previous attempt to reboot Point Break in 2015, directed by Ericson Core, failed at the box office and did not receive a continuation. Judging by its concept, AMC's new series aims to avoid the mistakes of the remake and offer a more thoughtful expansion of the legendary story.
