Screenwriter talks about canceled "hardcore" DC film about Lobo
Jason Fuchs admitted that his version would have made Deadpool look like a family film.
Hollywood screenwriter and showrunner Jason Fuchs, known for his work on the series Welcome to Derry, revealed details about an unrealized DC Studios project — a feature film about the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo. According to the writer, the film was intended to be one of the most radical and brutal comic book adaptations in the genre's history.
Despite active development and a clear creative vision, the project was canceled at the script stage, largely due to its extreme tone and intended mature (R) rating.
Deadpool Would Have Seemed Like a Family Film
Describing the film's concept, Fuchs compared it to an unexpected blend of popular franchises and an auteur approach. In his words, the project could be described as "Guardians of the Galaxy if directed by Quentin Tarantino."
The screenwriter noted that the film was conceived as a psychotic, ultraviolent R-rated story, filled with dark humor, gore, and absurdity. In such a context, Fuchs emphasized, even Deadpool would seem almost like a Disney family film. This factor, in his opinion, was the key reason for DC's decision not to produce the film.
Who Fuchs Envisioned as Lobo
When asked about casting, the screenwriter immediately named the actor he had always envisioned in the lead role. According to Fuchs, Lobo was, from the very beginning, exclusively associated with Jason Momoa.
He also specified that he considered Michael Bay the ideal director for such a film, capable of amplifying the story's insanity and visual spectacle. In his vision, it would have been an explosive, provocative blockbuster without compromises.
Parody of the "Martha" Scene
Fuchs also shared details about one of the script scenes, which directly parodied the famous "Martha" moment from the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
In this scene, a villain, begging Lobo for mercy, mentions that his mother's name is Martha. Upon learning his own mother shared the same name, Lobo pauses for a moment, then coldly kills his opponent, remarking why that should even matter to him. The episode was conceived as a sharp and brutal deconstruction of one of the most debated moments in the DC film universe.
The Character's Possible Future
Despite the project's cancellation, Jason Fuchs expressed hope that Lobo's appearance in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe (DCU) might still pave the way for the character to reach the big screen. According to him, the cosmic bounty hunter possesses immense potential that could eventually be realized in a more suitable format and at a different time.
