James Cameron surprised by Denis Villeneuve's lack of an Oscar nomination

The creator of Avatar has joined the discussion surrounding the American Academy's decision not to nominate the director of Dune in a key category.

The debate over the Oscar race outcomes continues to gain momentum within the professional community. One of the most resonant topics has been the absence of an Oscar nomination for Best Director for Denis Villeneuve, despite the success of his films. James Cameron voiced sharp criticism of this decision, expressing bewilderment at the Academy's stance.

Cameron on Awards and Science Fiction

In his comment, the director made it clear that he himself never focuses on award prospects when working on his films. According to him, the Academy has traditionally been lukewarm toward science fiction cinema, regardless of its scale and impact on the industry.

Cameron emphasized that this situation is not unfamiliar to him: his own projects, including the Avatar franchise, rarely receive recognition specifically in directing categories. In this context, he cited the example of Denis Villeneuve, who directed both Dune films but was never considered a contender for the directing award—even at the level of the Directors Guild of America (DGA).

"Award Games" and Choosing a Path

The director noted that the industry often turns awards into a separate game with its own rules, not always connected to the creator's actual contribution. In Cameron's view, it is far more important to make films that audiences genuinely want to see in theaters.

In his statement, he indicated that he consciously chooses this path, even if it doesn't always align with the logic of the awards season. However, Cameron did not soften his phrasing, apologizing only if his words offended anyone.

The Dune Paradox: No Director, but Nominations

The situation surrounding Dune is particularly telling given that both films were nominated for the American Academy's top honor—in the Best Picture category. Thus, the projects were recognized as significant works of the year, yet the contribution of their director remained outside the Best Director nomination.

This contrast is one of the reasons why Villeneuve's absence from the list of nominees sparked such a strong reaction within the professional community.

Support from Colleagues

James Cameron is far from the only one to publicly support the director. Other film industry figures have also spoken on the topic. For instance, actor Josh Brolin, who played Gurney Halleck in Dune, jokingly stated that he was ready to leave the profession if Villeneuve's work was not properly recognized.

All of this further reinforces the sense that the issue of recognizing directorial work in genre filmmaking remains a painful and unresolved matter for Hollywood.
