A German actor will play a villain in the Superman sequel

James Gunn has chosen the actor for a key role in the film Superman: The Man of Tomorrow.

Director and head of DC Studios, James Gunn, has finalized the actor who will portray one of Superman's most dangerous foes in the franchise's continuation. The role of Brainiac in the film Superman: The Man of Tomorrow has been awarded to German actor Lars Eidinger.

Brainiac's First Appearance on the Big Screen

The upcoming film will mark Brainiac's first-ever feature film appearance. This character is considered one of the key antagonists in the DC Universe, arguably second in importance only to Lex Luthor. Brainiac was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, first appearing in the pages of Action Comics #242.

Choosing this particular villain highlights James Gunn's intention to expand the Superman mythology and bring to the screen a threat grander than the hero's usual earthly adversaries.

Official Confirmation from James Gunn

Gunn personally announced Eidinger's casting on social media. According to Gunn, the actor was the top candidate after a thorough search.

"In our search for an actor to play Brainiac, Lars Eidinger was the best. Welcome to the DCU, Lars!" he wrote.

Who is Brainiac in DC Canon?

According to the comics, Brainiac is an android from the planet Colu, endowed with a colossal super-intellect. His obsessive goal is to collect all knowledge in the universe, which often leads to the destruction of entire civilizations.

In DC mythology, Brainiac represents a threat of such magnitude that Superman is sometimes forced to ally even with Lex Luthor. In several storylines, the villain is linked to the tragic fate of Krypton: he either shrinks the Man of Steel's home planet or becomes an indirect cause of its destruction.

Production Timeline and Premiere

Filming for Superman: The Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to begin in April 2026. The film's worldwide theatrical premiere is set for July 9, 2027.

The project will be one of the key elements in the further development of the rebooted DC cinematic universe.

Context: The New Era of DC Studios

The film Superman was the first major project under James Gunn's new strategy for the DC Studios he oversees. The film demonstrated solid commercial performance, grossing over $616 million worldwide.

Appointing Brainiac as the sequel's main villain and selecting Eidinger for the role make it clear that the sequel will bet on a larger-scale conflict and a significant expansion of the cosmic side of the DC Universe.
