James Cameron hinted at a reboot of Fantastic Voyage

The director of Avatar 3 promised a soon-to-be-announced long-gestating project, in development for almost 30 years).

James Cameron has shared encouraging news about one of his oldest and most mysterious projects—a remake of the classic 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage. According to the director, an official announcement for the project could happen "very soon."

"We are working with a director on a new script, and the project could make significant progress in the coming year," said Cameron, who first initiated development of the remake back in the late 1990s.

In 2016, Guillermo del Toro was confirmed to direct the project. However, over the years of the film's development, other notable filmmakers have shown interest in it at various times. Among them were Roland Emmerich, who planned to shoot the film in 3D, as well as Paul Greengrass and Shawn Levy.

Cameron himself completed work on the script at one point, but after the monumental success of Titanic, he fully focused on creating and expanding the Avatar franchise. The Fantastic Voyage project was not canceled but merely postponed.

About three years ago, Guillermo del Toro confirmed that he hadn't given up hope of returning to the remake. In the fall of 2025, he mentioned three upcoming projects—The Buried Giant and Fury—refusing to reveal the name of the third, which reignited rumors about Fantastic Voyage.

Screenwriter David S. Goyer, who also worked on the project, gave fans additional hope. Earlier this year, he noted that production was extremely close to starting:

"We were in pre-production, it was very close... The project was shelved under the previous Fox leadership, but it was a wonderful experience. I hope we can make it happen one day."

Thus, the remake of Fantastic Voyage, which has been in development hell for nearly three decades, seems to have received a new lease on life. Recall that the original film, starring Raquel Welch, told the story of scientists who developed technology to shrink people to microscopic size for a dangerous mission inside the human body.
