Kevin Costner has been sued for non-payment of costume rental fees
The creator of the western saga Horizons faces new financial difficulties.
Kevin Costner and his production company, Territory Pictures, have been hit with another lawsuit related to the production of the western saga Horizons. The company Western Costume has accused the actor and producer of failing to pay for the rental of costumes used during the filming of Horizons: Part 2.
The lawsuit was filed in a California court. According to the case documents, Western Costume seeks to recover approximately $440,000 for unpaid invoices, as well as compensation for damaged costume items returned after filming in poor condition.
Financial Challenges of the Project
This new legal dispute is another blow to Costner's ambitious project, which has faced significant financial and organizational difficulties for several years. The actor envisioned Horizons as a series of four films, but executing this plan has proven extremely challenging.
The budget for the first installment was around $100 million, yet its global box office revenue barely exceeded $38.7 million. The second part, initially slated for release last year, was delayed, and a new release date has yet to be announced.
Failed Attempts to Secure Funding
In an effort to continue the project, Costner reportedly held talks with representatives from Saudi Arabia regarding potential funding for the third and fourth parts of the saga. However, no agreement was reached. As of last year, filming for Horizons 3 remained not fully financed, casting doubt on the film's production.
Notably, this is not the first lawsuit related to prop rentals for the project. Earlier this year, Territory Pictures settled a similar dispute over unpaid rental fees for costumes and props used in the production of the first and second parts of Horizons.
Future Plans
Despite the series of setbacks, Kevin Costner continues to pursue his production initiatives. Construction has already begun on a new $100 million film studio in Utah, a joint venture between Territory Pictures and a local developer. The project is seen as a long-term investment in creating an independent production base.
