Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin explained the break in his career
The actor explained why he left the film industry as a teenager).
Macaulay Culkin, who became a global star in childhood thanks to the Home Alone duology, openly discussed the reasons for his departure from the profession at the age of 14. In a recent interview, the actor admitted that at some point, he simply wanted to experience the life of an ordinary teenager, away from film sets and the pressures of fame.
After several years of continuous work, Culkin decided to take a break in his career, despite high demand and his status as one of Hollywood's most recognizable young actors of the early 1990s.
The Desire for a Normal Teenage Experience
According to the 45-year-old actor, a turning point for him was working on the film Richie Rich (1994), after which he finally realized he wanted to stop.
"What I was missing out on was being with people my age. In many movies, I acted alone, without a full ensemble. At least Tom Hanks had a volleyball. I was alone—literally home alone," Culkin remarked with irony.
The actor confessed that he wanted to socialize with peers, go on dates, attend parties, and simply live an ordinary life. "I can't even tell you how many bar mitzvahs I missed," he added with a laugh.
Acting as an Unchosen Path
Culkin also emphasized that he never dreamed of fame or consciously planned an acting career. According to him, it all began by chance: his father took his older siblings to auditions, and his mother, tired of the trips, once asked to bring her youngest son along.
"From the very first audition, I was approved. I didn't find this profession—it found me," Culkin explained.
Over time, it was precisely this realization—that acting became his calling rather than an imposed role—that helped him return to the profession as an adult.
Attitude Toward Fame and Return to the Screen
Speaking about his fame, Culkin metaphorically noted: "You can't put toothpaste back in the tube." In his opinion, fame is an irreversible experience that one can only learn to live with, not escape.
Today, the actor is once again active in film and television. In particular, he will appear in the second season of the series Fallout, which premiered on December 16, 2025. In 2023, Macaulay Culkin's contribution to the industry was officially recognized—he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
