Jamie Lee Curtis missed out on The Exorcist because of her mother
The actress admitted that Janet Lee deliberately shielded her from an early and overly heavy role.
Jamie Lee Curtis, the star of the cult horror franchise Halloween, revealed that her entry into the horror genre could have started much earlier—back in the early 1970s, with one of the most terrifying films in cinematic history. However, the decisive factor was the stance of her mother, actress Janet Lee, who prevented her daughter from auditioning for The Exorcist.
Curtis recalled this episode while participating in Drew Barrymore's show, where she openly discussed the family decision that influenced her entire career.
An Offer That Was Declined
According to Jamie Lee Curtis, when she was around 12 years old, the producer of The Exorcist contacted Janet Lee and proposed that her daughter audition for the role of Regan—the girl possessed by a demon.
"He called my mother and said, 'I'm producing an adaptation of the book The Exorcist. Would you allow Jamie to audition?' I was about twelve at the time. I was quite noticeable—with character, not a quiet kid. Apparently, he saw me at some party and thought I'd be a fit," the actress recalled.
Janet Lee's response was unequivocal and final: she refused without even discussing the possibility of her daughter's involvement in the project.
Conscious Protection of Childhood
Jamie Lee Curtis emphasized that over the years, she has come to appreciate this decision more and more. According to her, her mother consciously prioritized the child's well-being over a potential career and early fame.
"My mother, thank God, really wanted me to have a childhood," said the actress, addressing Drew Barrymore, whose career began at the age of seven with the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Curtis admitted that only as an adult did she truly realize how traumatic and psychologically damaging the experience of participating in such a dark film at such a young age could have been.
How Things Turned Out in the End
The role of Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist ultimately went to Linda Blair, bringing her worldwide fame and an Academy Award nomination. Jamie Lee Curtis entered the horror genre later—at the age of 19—playing Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's film Halloween (1978), which made her a genre icon and earned her the nickname "Scream Queen."
In 2022, the actress definitively concluded this role by returning once more to the character of Laurie Strode in the film Halloween Ends, the finale of the new trilogy.
Context: The Future of The Exorcist
Interestingly, the cult story by William Peter Blatty is poised for a new reinterpretation. The franchise reboot has been entrusted to director Mike Flanagan, one of the most prominent modern horror auteurs. Filming for the new movie is scheduled for February 2026, and reportedly, Scarlett Johansson has been cast in the lead role.
Thus, Janet Lee's refusal nearly half a century ago not only shielded her daughter from premature immersion into dark cinema but also allowed Jamie Lee Curtis to approach the genre on her own terms—as an adult and self-aware actress.
