George Clooney and his family have acquired French citizenship
The actor explained his decision as concern for his children's privacy).
American actor George Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, have officially become citizens of France. The corresponding decree was published in the official state gazette Journal Officiel over the past weekend. French citizenship was also granted to their eight-year-old twin children—Ella and Alexander.
According to the published information, the decision on naturalization was made by the French authorities following established procedures. The Clooney family has had close ties to France for several years and regularly spends significant time there.
Property in Provence and Ties to France
George and Amal Clooney own property in the south of France—the former wine estate Domaine du Canadel in Provence. The property was purchased in 2021 and has since served as one of the family's main residences in Europe.
According to French media reports, the actor values the region for its seclusion, security, and high level of privacy, which is especially important for a family with children.
Reasons for Changing Citizenship
George Clooney himself has previously spoken multiple times about his desire to shield his children from intrusive media attention. In an interview with the French radio station RTL in early December, the actor specifically highlighted aspects of local legislation.
"Here, children aren't photographed. There are no paparazzi hiding at school gates. For us, that's the main thing," Clooney emphasized.
In an earlier interview with Esquire magazine, the actor also admitted that he consciously does not want to raise his children in Hollywood.
"I don't intend to raise our children in Los Angeles. I don't want them to constantly be compared to other celebrities' kids," he explained.
The Clooney Family's European Lifestyle
In addition to their French estate, the couple owns a historic manor in the United Kingdom and the famous villa on Lake Como in Italy, which George Clooney purchased back in 2002. Despite this, the actor previously referred to Provence as the place "where we are the happiest."
Obtaining French citizenship confirms the Clooney family's long-term choice in favor of a European lifestyle focused on privacy, security, and tranquility, away from Hollywood publicity.
