Sydney Sweeney will return in the thriller sequel The Maid
Lionsgate has officially greenlit a sequel to the box office hit and tasked Paul Feig with adapting the novel The Housemaid's Secret.
The psychological thriller The Maid has become one of the standout successes of this year's box office, giving Lionsgate the confidence to continue the story. Against the backdrop of impressive earnings, it was officially announced that a sequel is in development, based on the second book by Freida McFadden—The Housemaid's Secret.
Box Office Success and the Decision for a Sequel
In its first two and a half weeks of release, The Maid grossed $133 million against a production budget of $35 million. This result marked a true breakthrough for the project and confirmed the high audience interest in Millie's story.
The audience's enthusiastic reception was the key factor prompting Lionsgate to quickly move forward with the sequel.
The Key Team Returns
Director Paul Feig, along with the lead actors—Sydney Sweeney, who will reprise her role as Millie, and Michele Morrone, returning as Enzo—are set to return for the sequel. Filming is planned to begin later this year.
As with the first film, production will be handled by the companies Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures.
What Was The Maid About?
The original film told the story of a young woman trying to escape her past. Millie takes up residence and work in the home of a wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that the homeowners have their own dangerous secrets.
The film's end credits, accompanied by Taylor Swift's song I Did Something Bad, served as a clear hint at the continuation of the story.
What is Known About the Sequel
The continuation will be based on Freida McFadden's second novel, providing the creators with a ready-made plot foundation. Paul Feig, commenting on the project's launch, stated:
"We are fortunate that Freida McFadden already has Millie's next chapter on paper, and we'll be able to work on adapting it."
Possible Return of Amanda Seyfried
Earlier at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Amanda Seyfried shared her thoughts on the prospect of a sequel. The actress admitted she hadn't been officially notified about a follow-up but had little doubt it would happen.
According to Seyfried, she hopes for a small cameo and would enthusiastically return to the role of Nina Winchester, noting she would be particularly interested to see how Millie would keep her former employer "on a short leash."
