The lead actors for Disney's Rapunzel film have been announced
Disney Studios has approved the actors for the roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in the live-action adaptation of the popular animated hit.
After several months of uncertainty, the project to adapt the animated film Tangled has once again entered an active phase. It has been revealed who will portray the key characters in the upcoming film, along with new details about the creative team.
Who Will Play Rapunzel and Flynn Rider
The lead role of Rapunzel has been awarded to Australian actress Teagan Croft, well known to audiences for her role as Rachel Roth in the series Titans. Her on-screen partner will be Milo Manheim—the star of the Disney Zombies franchise—who will play the charismatic adventurer Flynn Rider.
In the original 2010 animated film, the characters were voiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. For the live-action version, Disney has opted for a younger actor pairing, targeting a new generation of viewers.
The Villainess Role Remains Open
The role of the main antagonist—Mother Gothel—is currently vacant. Earlier, media reports suggested Disney was considering Scarlett Johansson, but this was never officially confirmed. The studio has not yet announced who will embody one of the story's most recognizable characters.
The Project's Fate After a Pause
Work on Rapunzel was temporarily put on hold following the box office failure of the live-action Snow White in early 2025. This forced Disney to reconsider its strategy for adapting classic animated films. However, by the fall of that same year, the studio returned to the project, and in December, officially announced the start of casting, confirming its serious intentions.
Director and Production Team
The film's director is Michael Gracey, who previously helmed the musical hit The Greatest Showman. The screenplay will be based on a draft by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is expected to retain key elements of the original story.
The project is produced by Kristen Burr, with Lucy Kitada serving as the executive producer.
Legacy of the Original Animated Film
The animated film Tangled, inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, was one of Disney's most successful projects of the 2010s. Its global box office exceeded $590 million, and the song I See the Light received an Academy Award nomination.
The original music was composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater, but it is not yet confirmed whether they will be involved in creating the soundtrack for the new film version.
