James Wan announces intention to direct a new 'Saw' film.

The creators of the cult horror film intend to return the franchise to its roots.

The legendary horror franchise 'Saw' is preparing for another stage of relaunch. At the Sundance Film Festival, director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell officially confirmed they are working on a new film within the series' universe. This project is envisioned as a 'spiritual successor' to the original 2004 movie.

The announcement was made during a special screening of the first 'Saw,' held as part of the festival where the film debuted exactly twenty years ago, launching one of the most recognizable horror franchises of the 21st century.

Returning to the Franchise's Birthplace

Addressing the audience, Wan and Whannell recalled the events of the early 2000s when their low-budget film was shown at Sundance and unexpectedly had a powerful effect on viewers. The creators admitted they had anxiously awaited the audience's reaction back then, uncertain of the film's fate.

It was within this symbolic context that James Wan first publicly confirmed plans to return to the franchise:
"All I can say for now is that we are going to do it again. We will make another movie. But I don't want to say too much. It's still very early."

Betting on Horror and Atmosphere

According to the director, the key idea behind the new project is a return to the spirit of the first 'Saw' – a claustrophobic, tense, and psychologically oppressive horror that made the film a cult classic.
"We want to return to the feel of the original and make another truly scary 'Saw' movie," Wan emphasized.

However, he noted that the team is aware of the complex mythology built up over the franchise's years of existence. To date, the series consists of nine sequels extensively exploring John Kramer's past, his philosophy, and the evolution of the traps.

A New Start Without Overloaded Mythology

While the exact format of the project remains undisclosed, the creators' statements indicate a desire to reboot the franchise conceptually rather than continue complicating the existing story universe. The focus is planned to shift from expanding the lore to atmosphere, moral ambiguity, and psychological pressure—the elements that made the first film iconic.

Current Status:

  • Release date not announced.

  • Casting not revealed.

  • Distributing studio not officially named.

Franchise Context

The original 'Saw' was released in 2004, made on a minimal budget, and became a global box office hit. It spawned an entire wave of imitators and defined the development of the 'torture-horror' genre for years to come. The franchise cemented James Wan's status as one of the leading auteurs of modern genre cinema and served as the launching pad for his career in major studio projects.

Wan and Whannell's return to 'Saw' after two decades is seen by the industry as an attempt to reinterpret the series' legacy and remind audiences of its original vision.
