Director of 'Snow White' Joins Disney+ Series 'Eragon'
Showrunners and writers have been appointed for the screen adaptation of Christopher Paolini's fantasy saga 'Inheritance' about a Dragon Rider.
The adaptation of Christopher Paolini's cult book series 'Inheritance' has officially reached a key production stage. The streaming service Disney+ has confirmed the creative team for the 'Eragon' series, thereby solidifying serious intentions to launch the large-scale fantasy project about the return of Dragon Riders.
The project is being developed as a full-fledged series designed to offer a more detailed and faithful reinterpretation of the story compared to the previous screen adaptation.
Creative Team and Showrunners
Marc Webb—the director of the recent 'Snow White'—has been appointed as the executive producer of the series. Showrunner duties will be shared by Todd Hartman, known for the series 'The Resident,' and Todd Helbing, who worked on 'Superman & Lois.'
Todd Hartman is also co-writing the screenplay for 'Eragon' with the original book's author, Christopher Paolini, which should ensure a more accurate adaptation of the world and characters of the original saga.
The series is being produced by 20th Television. Disney acquired the rights to the entire 'Inheritance' book series back in 2022.
Plot: The Birth of a New Dragon Rider
As in the original novel, the future series' story focuses on a teenager named Eragon, whose fate is to become the first Dragon Rider in centuries.
The hero must forge an unbreakable bond with his dragon, master ancient magic, and challenge the mad king who destroyed the order of Riders. The narrative blends elements of classic fantasy, a coming-of-age story, and a large-scale conflict between good and evil.
Franchise Context and Previous Adaptation
The first novel in the series, 'Eragon,' was published in 2002 and quickly became an international bestseller. In 2006, the book received a film adaptation starring Edward Speleers.
Despite its box office success, the film garnered predominantly negative reviews from critics and fans of the original, which ultimately prevented the franchise from being developed on the big screen.
The new Disney+ series aims to rectify the mistakes of the previous version and give Paolini's story a second chance—this time in the format of a multi-episode fantasy series with more detailed exploration of the world of Alagaësia and its heroes.
