Netflix CEO Confirms 'Superman' Flop: Early Digital Release Linked to Poor Box Office Performance

Ted Sarandos essentially acknowledged at Senate hearings that the DC adaptation did not meet Warner Bros.' expectations.

During recent U.S. Senate hearings, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos indirectly confirmed that the early digital release of Warner Bros.' film 'Superman' was directly linked to its poor box office performance. The top executive's statements shed light on one of the most discussed industry decisions of the past year—the blockbuster's swift departure from the big screen to online platforms.

Sarandos' remarks serve as further confirmation that the reboot of the DC cinematic universe has encountered significant challenges from the very start.

Box Office Falls Short of Projections

The film, directed by James Gunn, was approaching the $600 million mark when the co-head of DC Studios announced its impending digital release on August 12, 2025—just three days later.

Analysts had previously predicted that 'Superman's' global box office could reach $650 million, but these forecasts were not met. In the end, the blockbuster concluded its theatrical run with $616 million worldwide, falling short of expectations for a flagship project of the revamped DC universe.

It was against this backdrop, as suggested by Sarandos' comments, that the decision to expedite the film's transition to digital platforms was made.

35 Days in Theaters and Sharp Criticism

The digital release occurred just 35 days after its big-screen premiere—an extremely short window for a big-budget superhero film. This move significantly undermined 'Superman's' status as a key DC release and drew sharp criticism from advocates of traditional theatrical exhibition.

Cinema owners were particularly dissatisfied, as such decisions mean a loss of potential revenue and weaken the exclusivity of the theatrical window.

Within the industry, this case is viewed as an alarming signal of how quickly studios are willing to move even their largest projects to digital formats if financial performance does not meet expectations.

James Gunn's Position and the 'Peacemaker' Factor

James Gunn was later asked to comment on the film's unusually early release on online platforms. The director acknowledged that the decision was driven by several factors, including the release schedule of other DC projects.

"It's very complicated, but the truth is, the reason is 'Peacemaker.' I originally thought 'Peacemaker' would come out next month. Many factors were beyond our control, and ultimately 'Peacemaker' is coming out now," Gunn explained.

He added that he wanted to give everyone who wished to see 'Superman' the opportunity to do so, including those who couldn't make it to theaters: "Ultimately, I wanted everyone who wants to see 'Superman' to be able to, even those who couldn't get to the theaters. And that truly is the reason."

DC's Flagship Under Scrutiny

Ted Sarandos' words and James Gunn's subsequent comments have only reinforced the perception that the first major release of the rebooted DC cinematic universe did not become the confident start Warner Bros. had hoped for.

The 'Superman' case clearly demonstrates how fragile the balance between theatrical releases and digital platforms remains today—even for projects intended to form the foundation of a new superhero era.
