'Iron Sky' Director to Make Film About Communists on Mars
Director Timo Vuorensola Announces New Satirical Project About a Secret Soviet Colonization of the Red Planet.
The team behind the cult sci-fi franchise Iron Sky is reuniting for another absurdist science fiction project. This time, the target of satire is not Nazis on the Moon, but communists who have established themselves on Mars. Director Timo Vuorensola and producer Tero Kaukomaa have already begun seeking financing for their new project, titled Deep Red.
A Sci-Fi Trilogy Planned Over Several Years
According to the creators, Deep Red is envisioned as a full-fledged science fiction trilogy with a total budget of around 15 million euros. Filming for all three movies is planned to be done back-to-back, starting in 2027.
Releases are slated for 2029, 2030, and 2031, allowing the filmmakers to craft a unified story arc and gradually unveil the world of this alternative space history.
Not Part of Iron Sky, But in a Recognizable Style
Despite featuring the same creative team, the new project is not directly connected to the Iron Sky universe. However, the authors emphasize that the film will be made in a similarly eccentric and provocative manner.
While Iron Sky told the story of Nazis hiding on the dark side of the Moon, Deep Red moves the field of ideological battle to Mars, where, in the creators' vision, 'the Red threat is alive and well.'
How Communists Colonized Mars
The trilogy's action takes place in an alternate version of history. In the world of Deep Red, communists secretly established themselves on the Red Planet back in the 1950s, building an isolated utopian society completely hidden from Earth.
According to the filmmakers' concept, many years of isolation have allowed the Martian colony to create a 'truly functional communist system,' possible only through complete separation from the rest of humanity.
Plot and the Deep Red AI
The main events unfold in the present day. An American astronaut crashes on Mars and accidentally discovers the hidden Soviet colony. The Martian city is governed by an artificial intelligence named Deep Red—a system built on the basis of an old Soviet chess supercomputer.
This element, the creators say, will become an important part of the trilogy's satirical and philosophical statement, blending political allegory, science fiction, and Vuorensola's signature absurdist humor.
