'Arrow' Star Stephen Amell to Lead 'Baywatch' Reboot
Stephen Amell to Play a Grown-Up Hobie Buchanan in New Fox Project.
Fox has announced the first confirmed cast member for the reboot of the iconic series Baywatch. The lead role has gone to Stephen Amell, best known for his starring role in the superhero series Arrow.
A Fresh Take on the Cult Classic
Amell will portray Hobie Buchanan—an adult version of the character from the original show. He is now the captain of the lifeguard service, continuing the legacy of his legendary father, Mitch Buchanan.
The plot of the new project centers on the hero's quiet life being upended by the arrival of Charlie—a daughter he never knew he had. The young woman is determined to continue the family dynasty and become a lifeguard alongside her father, creating a dynamic of mentorship and generational conflict.
Showrunner's Enthusiasm
Project showrunner Matt Nix commented on the casting choice:
"From our very first conversation, Stephen demonstrated exactly what the new chapter of Baywatch needs: heart, drive, and that unmistakable heroic energy. He's the kind of actor who can run into danger, carry emotional weight, and do it all with a spark. We're really excited to get started."
Production Details
The Baywatch reboot was first announced by Fox in September 2025 for the 2026-2027 television season. A total of 12 episodes have been ordered. Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 in Los Angeles.
Additionally, on February 18, Fox will hold an open casting call to fill other roles, offering newcomers a chance to join the iconic franchise.
The Legacy of the Original
The original Baywatch debuted in 1989 on NBC and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The show ran for 11 seasons, leaving a significant mark on pop culture and forever cementing the image of California beach lifeguards in the public consciousness.
