Sony Greenlights New 'Charlie's Angels' Movie
The studio has launched a full-scale reboot of the classic series for the big screen.
The legendary detective heroines are gearing up for a return to cinemas. Sony Pictures has announced that it has begun development on a new feature film based on the iconic series Charlie's Angels.
A Franchise Reboot
This will be a complete reboot, reimagining the original story about three female detectives working for the Charles Townsend private investigation agency. The new version aims to combine high-octane action with a contemporary interpretation of the characters, while retaining the franchise's signature spirit.
The Screenwriter
The screenplay is being written by renowned Hollywood screenwriter Pete Chiarelli. He is best known for films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me 2, as well as the animated project GOAT, which was released in theaters this past Friday.
According to studio representatives, the project is in early development. However, bringing in an experienced screenwriter ensures a modern and engaging narrative capable of appealing to both old fans of the franchise and a new generation of viewers.
History and Legacy of the Original
The original Charlie's Angels series debuted on television in 1976 and instantly became a pop culture phenomenon. The first "Angels"—Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith—made television history. They were joined in the second season by Cheryl Ladd, who remained with the show until the end of its 115-episode run.
An integral part of the series was the voice of the mysterious boss, Charlie Townsend, voiced by actor John Forsythe. He guided the heroines' operations over the phone, adding an air of mystery and a unique atmosphere to the project.
This new film version aims to capture the spirit of the original while offering a contemporary take on the iconic franchise with compelling, strong female characters.
