ByteDance Pledges Stronger AI Controls to Hollywood Following Complaints Over Video Generation

The Chinese technology giant that owns TikTok has announced its readiness to tighten copyright protection measures amid a conflict with major Hollywood studios.

Following a wave of accusations from rights holders, the company ByteDance announced its intention to strengthen control over its video generation model, Seedance 2.0. The reason stems from suspicions of the unauthorized use of images of famous characters and actors, as well as the potential use of copyrighted content in training the neural network.

Pressure from Studios and ByteDance's Official Position
A ByteDance representative stated that the company "respects intellectual property rights" and is already taking additional steps to reinforce existing protection mechanisms. This involves expanding the filtering of user requests, automatically identifying copyrighted content, and speeding up the processing of complaints from rights holders.

The statement followed after Disney sent ByteDance an official notice demanding a halt to the violations. In its communication, the corporation accused the developers of Seedance 2.0 of "virtual looting" of intellectual property and claimed that the platform was using a "pirated library" of characters from popular franchises, including Marvel projects and the Star Wars saga.

Disney emphasized that the studio's iconic characters are being used "as if they were free clip art," which, in the company's view, sets a dangerous precedent for the entire industry.

Other Major Players Join the Conflict
Paramount has also joined the protests, sending its own notice concerning both Seedance 2.0 and the image generator Seedream.

Furthermore, the Motion Picture Association (MPA), which represents the interests of major market players such as Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix, issued a strong statement. The organization demanded that ByteDance "immediately cease activities that violate copyright," stressing that generative AI should not develop at the expense of others' intellectual property.

The Controversial Video and Industry Concerns
The immediate trigger for the escalation of the conflict was the publication of a realistic video created using Seedance 2.0, which recreated the likenesses of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The video spread rapidly across social media and caused concern among studios, as it demonstrated how easily AI can mimic the appearance and mannerisms of famous actors without their consent.

Experts note that such examples heighten Hollywood's fears regarding the mass proliferation of deepfakes and the undermining of the traditional content production model. Rights holders are concerned that without clear restrictions, video generation technologies could deprive authors of control over their own works.
