Arnold Schwarzenegger Cut from 'Predator: Badlands'

Director Dan Trachtenberg Reveals Unused Cameos of Iconic Franchise Characters

Fans of the legendary series could have seen the return of one of the most iconic heroes from 'Predator', but in the final version of the film, it never happened. As it turns out, Arnold Schwarzenegger's involvement in the new installment of the franchise was seriously considered, but scenes featuring his character were cut during the editing process.

This was revealed by the film's director, Dan Trachtenberg, in an interview with ScreenRant, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the project's development and explaining why audiences never got to see the long-awaited cameo.

Dutch's Return Was on the Table

According to the filmmaker, an early version of the script for 'Predator: Badlands' planned for the appearance of several iconic characters from the universe. Among them was Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer—the character Schwarzenegger played in the original 1987 film 'Predator'.

Trachtenberg confirmed that Dutch's image existed not just on paper; the team even prepared test visual effects to assess how such an appearance would look on screen.

"We wanted to pay tribute to the characters that Predators have clashed with over the decades," the director noted.

Not Just Schwarzenegger

In addition to Dutch, other iconic figures were featured in the draft materials. This included the heroine Naru from the film 'Prey', as well as a Xenomorph from the 'Alien' franchise and the creature from the animated project 'Predator: Killer of Killers'.

However, during the editing process, a decision was made to significantly cut down this scene, along with a number of dialogues. Ultimately, the creators limited themselves to visual references, leaving fans with room for speculation and theories.

Why Naru Didn't Return Either

Trachtenberg specifically commented on the absence of Naru. According to him, this was a conscious decision; the director did not want a "cheap" return for the character and preferred to save ideas for her potential appearance in a separate project, to make it a truly significant event.

Is a Director's Cut Possible?

At this point, it is unknown whether viewers will ever see the deleted scenes—for example, in an extended cut of the film or among bonus materials on physical media. Representatives for Schwarzenegger have not yet commented on the situation.

Meanwhile, interest in 'Badlands' remains high; the film has already become the highest-grossing project in the entire franchise, which significantly increases the likelihood of a sequel and new stories in the Predator universe.

If the studio's plans come to fruition, the return of Dutch or other iconic heroes could still happen—just not this time.
