'Scream' Franchise Creator Kevin Williamson Steps Back, Focuses on New Projects

Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter and director of 'Scream 7', has stated that he does not plan to repeat his directorial experience with the eighth installment of the iconic horror series. Despite the success of the previous film, he is ready to hand over the reins to new directors while remaining involved with the franchise in a consulting capacity.

New Focus on Other Projects
In a recent interview, Williamson emphasized that his creative ambitions lie outside the 'Scream' universe. He plans to work on a film based on his own script as well as several television projects that inspire him. "So, maybe I'll take on directing one of those," he noted.

On the Future of the Franchise
When asked about a potential 'Scream 8', Williamson stated he does not intend to unilaterally decide the series' fate: "Whoever takes it on will tell their own story. I have some ideas, but I'm interested to see what another creator does with the material." He added that being part of the franchise doesn't obligate him to constantly write scripts or direct films—new creators can take the initiative.

Sequel Status
According to Williamson, Paramount Pictures has not yet given an official "green light" for the eighth installment. "A decision hasn't been made yet. No one is seriously working on it. We just hope that, based on the box office numbers, there will be an eighth film. But there's no talk about it yet," he said.

Financial Success of the Seventh Installment
Meanwhile, 'Scream 7', which once again starred Neve Campbell, has grossed over $150 million worldwide, despite mixed reviews from critics. The new film has demonstrated that the franchise still holds interest for audiences, even without Williamson's direct involvement in directing the sequel.
