Paramount Passes on 'G.I. Joe' Script, Explores New Directions for Franchise Reboot
Paramount Parts Ways with Screenwriter Max Landis on 'G.I. Joe' Film
Paramount Pictures has decided not to move forward with Max Landis' script for a new film based on the 'G.I. Joe' universe. The studio has thus ended its collaboration with the writer on the project, which was intended to be the next installment in the franchise.
Landis himself confirmed that his version of the screenplay is no longer under consideration by the studio. The writer thanked the company for the opportunity to work on the material and noted that he was surprised information about his involvement in the project had appeared in the press at all.
What Landis' Version Was About
According to the author, the story he proposed was significantly different from previous films in the franchise. In his version of events, the Cobra organization had already succeeded in seizing power worldwide, while the legendary G.I. Joe team had been reduced to something akin to a myth or conspiracy theory.
The plot envisioned the heroes operating under conditions where most people do not even believe the unit actually exists.
An Attempt at an Industry Comeback
News that Max Landis was working on the script for a new adaptation of Hasbro's popular toy line emerged in February 2026. The project could have marked the screenwriter's return to major Hollywood projects after several years of virtual absence from the industry.
Landis had largely not worked in film since 2019. Between 2017 and 2019, allegations of sexual misconduct were made against him, after which many studios ceased collaboration with the writer.
The Screenwriter's Own Reaction
Several years ago, Landis publicly commented on the situation. He acknowledged making serious mistakes in his personal relationships and described himself as a "toxic partner" to some women he had been involved with.
According to him, he understands why many people view him with extreme criticism.
What's Next for the Project
Despite rejecting Landis' script, Paramount Pictures does not intend to shelve the project. The studio continues work on a new film in the 'G.I. Joe' franchise and is in negotiations with other writers.
New script treatments are expected to be proposed soon, which will then determine the project's future direction.
