Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Gets Extended Theatrical Run
Universal Restores Longer Theatrical Windows for Major Releases
Universal Pictures is revising its theatrical distribution strategy. Starting in 2026, several of the studio's major projects will remain in cinemas for longer periods before becoming available on streaming platforms and home entertainment formats.
According to Western media reports, the studio is effectively returning to the practice that existed before the COVID-19 pandemic, when films enjoyed significantly longer runs on the big screen.
New Distribution Strategy
Under Universal Pictures' updated policy, beginning in 2026, select major releases will remain exclusively in theaters for a minimum of five weekends. Only after this period will they become available on digital platforms and home viewing services.
From 2027 onward, the theatrical window is planned to expand even further—to seven weeks.
This marks a notable shift from the pandemic era, when studios often released films digitally just three weeks after their theatrical debut.
'The Odyssey' Among First Projects
One of the initial films to be released under this new model will be the large-scale historical epic 'The Odyssey', directed by Christopher Nolan.
The film is scheduled to premiere on July 17, 2026, and is already considered one of the most anticipated projects in the studio's lineup.
Star-Studded Cast
The film's ensemble cast features several prominent Hollywood actors. Starring in the movie are Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
'The Odyssey' is expected to become one of the studio's most ambitious projects in the coming years.
Changes Not Applicable to All Projects
However, the new distribution strategy will only apply to major studio releases. Films from the Focus Features division, which specializes in auteur and festival cinema, will continue to follow their own flexible release schedules.
With this approach, Universal Pictures aims to reignite audience interest in the big-screen experience and give major projects more time for a full theatrical run.
