John Lithgow nearly turned down the role of Dumbledore due to J.K. Rowling’s stance.
The actor explained his decision by stating that the values of the Harry Potter world, in his opinion, differ from the views of the book’s author.
John Lithgow has admitted that he seriously considered turning down the role of Albus Dumbledore in the new series but ultimately decided to stay with the project. The reason for his doubts was the public controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling’s stance.
Internal doubts before accepting the role
According to the actor, he considered leaving the project while it was still in the discussion phase. Lithgow noted that he does not share the author’s views and has never met her personally.
Nevertheless, he came to the conclusion that the world of Harry Potter itself embodies different values. The actor emphasized that this universe, as he perceives it, stands against intolerance, bigotry, and the division of people.
"The world is on the side of good"
Lithgow explained his decision by saying that the story of Harry Potter is fundamentally built on the contrast between good and evil, where themes of acceptance, friendship, and the fight against prejudice play a crucial role.
This, in his view, allows for a separation between the artistic work and the personal opinions of its author. As a result, the actor decided that participating in the project aligns with his own beliefs.
HBO’s position
Earlier, HBO’s leadership also addressed the situation. The company’s CEO, Casey Bloys, stated that the author’s views are her personal matter and do not affect the franchise’s content.
He emphasized that the project carries no political message tied to those statements and suggested that discussions about the author’s stance should remain separate from the series.
Ongoing controversy surrounding the author
In recent years, J.K. Rowling has remained one of the most debated figures in the cultural sphere. Her statements on women’s rights and gender identity have sparked widespread public reaction and divided audiences.
Some actors who previously appeared in the Harry Potter films have publicly distanced themselves from her position, further intensifying the debate surrounding the franchise.
Against this backdrop, John Lithgow’s involvement in the new series has become even more notable, reflecting an attempt to separate the artistic value of the work from the views of its creator.
