Epic Games announces massive layoffs amid declining interest in Fortnite
Game developers behind the global hit Fortnite are forced to cut hundreds of jobs to stabilize the business.
Epic Games has announced massive layoffs that will impact over 1,000 employees. The decision comes amid financial struggles and a dip in audience engagement for the studio’s flagship title, Fortnite.
Scale of Cuts & Cost-Saving Measures
According to official information, around 20 per cent of the workforce will be affected. Once the process is complete, the company will have just over 4,000 employees.
Management also plans to reduce expenses by approximately $500 million. Savings will be achieved through contract restructuring, cutting marketing costs, and eliminating unfilled job positions.
Reasons Behind the Crisis
In a message to employees, CEO Tim Sweeney stated that the core issue stems from declining interest in Fortnite, which began in 2025.
He noted that the company’s current expenditures far exceed its revenue, forcing leadership to take drastic action. Sweeney emphasized that the situation calls for a strategic overhaul and cost optimization to maintain financial stability.
Impact on the Gaming Industry
The Epic Games chief also pointed out that the company’s troubles reflect a broader downturn in the gaming industry. Key factors include slowing market growth, reduced consumer spending, and intensifying competition.
Additional pressure comes from weaker sales of current-gen consoles compared to previous cycles, as well as growing competition from other forms of entertainment.
What’s Next for the Company
Despite the large-scale layoffs, leadership believes these measures will help stabilize the company and preserve its core business operations.
Epic Games maintains that the cost optimization and strategic reprioritization will allow the studio to adapt to changing market conditions and continue developing its projects.
