Director of the ‘It’ duology plans to merge the films into one version.
Andrés and Barbara Muschietti continue work on the extended version of the horror story.
The creators of ‘It’ and ‘It Chapter Two’, Andrés Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, have confirmed that the idea of merging both parts into a single feature-length project is still in development.
A larger version of the story
This is not simply about splicing the two films together, but creating a fully-fledged new version with a different narrative structure. It is anticipated that the final runtime could exceed six hours.
The extended version will include not only previously cut scenes but also entirely new episodes that the director plans to shoot specifically for this project.
Why the project is delayed
According to Barbara Muschietti, the main reason for the delay remains a lack of time. In recent years, the team has been occupied with other projects, including work on the prequel series ‘Welcome to Derry’.
Currently, the second season of this series remains the priority, but the creators emphasize that they will definitely return to the combined version.
Working with the studio
The creators of the project note that they are approaching the stage where they can officially approach the studio with a proposal to realize the extended version.
Discussions about a similar project have taken place before, but at that time it was at an early stage of consideration.
New narrative structure
The idea behind the combined version aims for a more cohesive and in-depth exploration of the story. The plan is to change the structure so that events from different timelines intertwine more organically.
To achieve this, the director will need to shoot additional scenes that will serve as connective tissue between the two parts.
Success of ‘Welcome to Derry’
Interest in the ‘It’ universe remains high. The series ‘Welcome to Derry’, released in late 2025, received positive reviews and demonstrated strong ratings.
The project’s final episode drew a multi-million audience in the US within just a few days, confirming sustained viewer interest in this story.
Project prospects
If the combined version is realized, it could become the most expansive and complete on-screen adaptation of the ‘It’ story.
This format would allow for deeper character development, a heightened atmosphere, and present audiences with a more unified vision of the iconic horror.
