New Line Launches Production on *Weapons* Horror Prequel Focusing on Aunt Gladys

The studio has announced a new project that will explore the origins of one of the most striking horror antagonists of 2025. New Line Cinema has officially begun development on a prequel to Weapons, currently titled Gladys. The film will center on Aunt Gladys — a devilishly charismatic villain with fiery red curls who abducts children. The story aims to reveal how she transformed from an ordinary woman into a terrifying monster who became a cult figure in the horror genre.

Writers and producers on board
The screenplay is being developed by Weapons creator Zach Cregger alongside Zack Shields, known for his work in the MonsterVerse, including Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Their collaboration is expected to preserve the tone of the original film while expanding the Weapons universe with a deeper backstory for its central antagonist.

Producers Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, who also worked on the original movie, are returning for the prequel. Their involvement is likely to maintain the film’s signature style and dark aesthetic, as well as the horror elements that resonated with audiences.

Amy Madigan may return as Gladys
Amy Madigan’s portrayal of Aunt Gladys earned her major accolades, including an Academy Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, Critics Choice Award, and a Golden Globe nomination. The character’s look also became one of the most popular Halloween costumes in 2025.

At the 2026 Oscars ceremony, Madigan expressed her willingness to reprise the role: “We all know how long things take in this business. Nothing is real until it happens. But I trust Zach Cregger. And if it all comes together, it would be great,” the actress said.

Box office success and prequel expectations
Made on a $38 million budget, Weapons grossed $270 million worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable horror films in recent years. Its commercial success and critical acclaim have created strong demand for a prequel.

Gladys is expected not only to expand the backstory of a now-iconic character but also to further strengthen the position of horror as a genre with both commercial power and cultural impact.
