"Weapons" Discouraged Steven Spielberg from Making Horror Films

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg has revealed that a recent horror film impressed him so deeply that it made him reconsider his own creative plans. In a recent interview, Spielberg — who is preparing to release his new sci-fi project Disclosure Day — said he continues to closely follow contemporary cinema and the work of fellow directors. However, one particular film stood out above the rest.

The film that changed his plans
The biggest recent discovery for Spielberg was the horror film Weapons, directed by Zach Cregger. According to the filmmaker, the movie left such a powerful impression that it effectively ended his long-standing desire to direct a pure horror film.

Spielberg admitted he had often considered working in the horror genre, even though his filmography already includes tense and frightening moments, most notably in the iconic Jaws. However, after watching Weapons, his motivation significantly declined.

“This film already did everything”
The director explained that Weapons felt so complete and impactful that it fully satisfied his interest in the genre.

He noted that the film delivers such an intense sense of fear and tension that it “scratches the itch” completely — leaving him with no desire to attempt something similar himself. It’s a rare case where another filmmaker’s work doesn’t inspire imitation, but instead removes the need to pursue the idea altogether.

Attention to modern cinema
Spielberg also emphasized that he actively follows new releases and holds modern filmmakers in high regard.

He specifically praised Dune: Part Two, calling it one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. Such recognition from one of the most influential directors in cinema history further elevates the status of the franchise.

Looking ahead to Dune: Part Three
Speaking about upcoming projects, Spielberg said he is eagerly awaiting Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled for release in December 2026.

He expressed hope that he might get to see the film early, highlighting his admiration for Denis Villeneuve and his approach to large-scale science fiction storytelling.

When a masterpiece reshapes ambition
The story surrounding Weapons highlights just how powerful modern cinema can be — even for established masters of the craft.

In Spielberg’s case, this goes beyond simple praise. It’s a rare acknowledgment that sometimes a single outstanding film can explore a genre so fully that others feel no need to revisit it.
