Andy Serkis to Return as Alfred in *The Batman 2*
Actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Alfred in The Batman 2, with filming set to begin this June in London. Serkis confirmed his return in a recent interview tied to the release of his animated film Animal Farm, which premieres on May 1, 2026.
Balancing a demanding schedule
One of the main questions surrounding Serkis’ return was how he would manage his busy schedule. In addition to The Batman 2, directed by Matt Reeves, he is also preparing a major new project set in Tolkien’s universe — The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
Despite the workload, Serkis assured that he will be able to handle both projects. According to him, he will join The Batman 2 production not at the very start, but closer to the later stages of filming.
Cast lineup
The sequel will also see the return of Robert Pattinson as Batman and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. Reports suggest that Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan may also join the cast, with Stan rumored to be in talks to play Harvey Dent.
Success of the original and franchise expansion
The original The Batman marked an important step for Warner Bros. in returning to a traditional theatrical release strategy after experimenting with simultaneous streaming and cinema debuts. The film grossed over $772 million worldwide, confirming strong audience interest in this new take on the Dark Knight.
The franchise has since expanded further, with the spin-off series The Penguin, released in 2024, receiving a warm reception and winning nine Emmy Awards, strengthening the brand and building anticipation for future installments.
