Writers from The Bear and Beef Join Development of New X-Men Film

Director Jake Schreier is assembling a strong creative team for the upcoming X-Men reboot. He has officially confirmed that Lee Sung Jin, creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, showrunner of The Bear, have joined the project as writers. Both are already working on a draft, and according to Schreier, development is moving forward actively despite being in the early stages.

A proven creative team
This collaboration is far from случайный. Schreier has previously worked with both Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo on Beef, as well as on Thunderbolts. In many ways, this marks a reunion of a team that has already demonstrated strong creative chemistry.

The director emphasized that this duo is capable of bringing emotional depth to the superhero genre. In his view, X-Men is not just about large-scale conflicts and spectacle, but also about personal struggles, identity, and the inner lives of its characters.

A new approach to the mutant story
Schreier noted that the writers are drawing inspiration from the original comics, where ideological conflicts and complex character relationships play a central role.

The goal is to portray the world of mutants not only as a battleground for global conflict, but also as a space for deeply human stories. This approach could make the film more emotionally engaging while preserving the масштаб and spectacle expected from the franchise.

Place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The new X-Men film is expected to be part of the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will likely be released after Avengers: Secret Wars.

However, mutants will make their first appearance earlier in Avengers: Doomsday, where Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden are set to reprise their roles. This will help bridge the classic version of the characters with the new generation introduced in Schreier’s film.

Script evolution
Before the new writers joined, the project had already gone through several iterations. Michael Lesslie worked on one version of the script, building on drafts by Aaron Rabin and Zak Dean. With Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo now involved, the project appears to be heading in a new creative direction.

Expectations for the reboot
The X-Men reboot is one of Marvel’s most anticipated projects in recent years. Expectations are high not only for a visually spectacular return of iconic characters, but also for a more modern and nuanced take on the themes that have always defined the franchise — discrimination, fear of the “other,” and the search for identity.

If the filmmakers succeed in combining blockbuster scale with strong драматургия, the new X-Men could become a major milestone for the MCU and set the tone for future mutant stories.
