Alien: Earth Creator to Direct Remake of Horror Film The Possessed
Warner Bros. is developing a new take on the Argentine horror film The Possessed (Terrified), with Noah Hawley — known for his work on Alien: Earth — set to direct. The project is being produced under Warner Bros. Pictures and is described not as a direct remake, but as a reimagining of the original story.
About the original film
Directed by Demián Rugna, the 2017 film follows a police officer and a group of paranormal investigators who encounter a series of disturbing and unexplained events in a neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
The film quickly gained a reputation as one of the most atmospheric and unsettling entries in modern horror. It received strong critical acclaim for its unconventional approach, intense tension, and ability to keep viewers in a constant state of unease.
A new vision from Noah Hawley
The upcoming version is being positioned as a “reimagining” rather than a scene-by-scene remake. This suggests Hawley will retain the core concept while reworking the сюжет, tone, and narrative structure to appeal to a broader audience.
Notably, Demián Rugna is also involved in the development of the project, increasing the chances that the new version will preserve the spirit of the original while expanding it on a larger scale.
Hawley will serve not only as director but also as a producer through his company 26 Keys, indicating deep creative involvement.
Current status
The remake is currently in early development. No casting details or release date have been announced yet.
However, with Hawley attached and the backing of a major studio, the project is already shaping up to be one of the more notable horror films in development.
Context and expectations
This will mark Hawley’s second feature film following Lucy in the Sky, as he returns to cinema after a successful run in television.
The original Terrified also had a strong festival presence and was selected as Argentina’s submission for the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category, highlighting its significance within the genre.
Given the growing interest in auteur-driven horror and international remakes, Hawley’s project could become a compelling blend of original vision and Hollywood scale.
