Budget of Michael Surpasses $200 Million

The production budget for Michael, the upcoming biopic about the King of Pop, has significantly increased and now exceeds $200 million. Initially estimated at around $150 million, the film’s cost rose by an additional $50 million due to extensive reshoots, placing it among the most expensive music biopics ever made.

Reasons behind the reshoots
The primary reason for the costly changes was a legal issue involving one of Michael Jackson’s former accusers. As a result, a substantial portion of the already filmed material could no longer be used for legal reasons.

Director Antoine Fuqua and screenwriter John Logan were forced to largely rebuild the film’s structure, revising key scenes and reshaping the narrative. This not only extended the production timeline but also had a major impact on the overall budget.

Scale of the project
The increased budget is not solely due to reshoots. It also includes material that could potentially be used in future installments, suggesting the studio may be positioning Michael as the foundation for a larger franchise.
