Warner Bros. Sparks Fan Backlash Over Limited IMAX Screenings of Dune

Warner Bros. has sparked backlash among fans after reporting “impressive success” for early ticket sales of Dune: Part Three — despite offering only a limited number of IMAX screenings worldwide.

The situation quickly drew criticism online, as fans discovered that the initial release included a very small number of showtimes, fueling accusations of a marketing stunt.

Limited screenings, bold claims
Tickets were reportedly made available for just one evening screening during opening weekend, across only 19 theaters globally. In total, that amounts to just 76 screenings — a surprisingly low number for a blockbuster of this scale.

Despite this, Warner Bros.’ head of distribution, Jeff Goldstein, stated that all screenings sold out completely, calling it proof of massive audience demand for large-format viewing.

Fan reaction and online criticism
Fans were quick to question the strategy, with many viewing it as a deliberate attempt to manufacture hype. While the screenings did sell out, critics argue that such results are easily achieved with such limited availability.

Social media users have mocked the situation, pointing out that similar numbers could be reached by a single major theater, highlighting the gap between the studio’s claims and the actual scale of the release.

Marketing impact vs. real demand
Despite the backlash, the strategy achieved its primary goal — generating headlines and creating a sense of urgency around the film.

Industry observers note that such tactics are often used to build early buzz for major franchises, especially when anticipation is already high.

Full release still ahead
The wide theatrical release of Dune: Part Three is scheduled for mid-December 2026. Only then will it become clear whether the strong interest translates into real box office performance.

Until then, debate around the studio’s marketing approach is likely to continue gaining momentum.
