Jamie Dornan to Play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Prequel
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have revealed key casting details for their new film set in Tolkien’s universe, announced during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation. The project will serve as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, focusing on events that take place before the familiar story.
A new Aragorn
Jamie Dornan has been cast as Aragorn, the Ranger who later becomes one of Middle-earth’s central heroes. Known globally for Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan now steps into one of fantasy’s most iconic roles.
The character was previously portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, making the new casting a major talking point among fans.
New and returning characters
Leo Woodall joins the cast as Halvard, a Dúnedain warrior and ally of Aragorn.
Lee Pace will reprise his role as the Elven king Thranduil, familiar to audiences from The Hobbit trilogy.
Andy Serkis returns as director and Gollum
Andy Serkis will direct the film and once again play Gollum, maintaining continuity with earlier adaptations.
According to Serkis, the film will continue the tradition of a large ensemble cast, which was a defining feature of the original trilogy.
Story: the hunt begins
The plot will center on a mission that takes place before the events of The Lord of the Rings. Aragorn, alongside Gandalf, sets out to track down Gollum in order to extract crucial information about the ring discovered by Bilbo.
As the story unfolds, they begin to realize the true nature of the One Ring — a powerful artifact that threatens all of Middle-earth.
Expanding the universe
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is part of a new wave of projects based on Tolkien’s works. The studios aim to expand the universe by adding new layers, characters, and backstory to the established lore.
With a mix of new faces and returning characters, the film is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about upcoming releases.
