Michael Jackson Biopic Becomes the Most Expensive in the Genre’s History
The biopic Michael has officially become the most expensive film in its genre, with a production budget reaching $200 million — a figure typically associated with major superhero blockbusters.
Record-breaking budget
According to the filmmakers, the total cost of the project has climbed to around $200 million, setting a new benchmark for musical biopics.
Such a масштаб budget is highly unusual for the genre. In this case, a significant portion of the expenses came not only from production itself but also from extensive reshoots that dramatically increased overall costs.
Reshoots and legal challenges
Director Antoine Fuqua and screenwriter John Logan were forced to rework large portions of the film due to a legal dispute involving one of Michael Jackson’s former accusers.
As a result, previously shot material could not be used, requiring the team to essentially rebuild parts of the narrative — extending production time and driving up the budget.
An unusual release strategy
Due to the scale of changes, audiences will see only part of the story upon release in April. While the title does not indicate it, the film effectively serves as the first installment of a larger narrative.
Additional footage, including concert sequences, has already been filmed and may be used in a sequel if the first film performs well.
Financial backing and expectations
The Michael Jackson estate played a key role in supporting the project, covering the costs of reshoots and additional material. This helped reduce financial risk for the studio while preserving the film’s ambitious scale.
Analysts predict an opening that could reach around $150 million worldwide, with the potential for even stronger performance driven by global interest in Jackson’s legacy.
Competition in the genre
The highest-grossing music biopic to date remains Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned over $900 million worldwide, followed by Elvis with around $288 million.
The creators of Michael are aiming not only to recoup its massive budget but also to challenge those benchmarks, leveraging its масштаб production and enduring public fascination with the King of Pop.
