Alex Proyas Returns with Paradise — and Bets on Artificial Intelligence

The director of I, Robot is launching an ambitious new project that will combine auteur filmmaking with cutting-edge technology.

After a long hiatus, Alex Proyas is making a return. The filmmaker, best known for The Crow and I, Robot, is beginning work on a new project titled Paradise (Heaven), which he has been developing for many years.

A Passion Project Gets the Green Light
The film is being produced with the support of Ex Machina Studios and K5 International, the companies that helped move the project out of development and into production.

Paradise is already set to be ներկայացատed at the Cannes Film Market, with principal photography scheduled to take place in Los Angeles. Casting is currently underway.

Plot: Heaven as an Illusion
The story follows a desperate bureaucrat who tries to escape his failing life and ends up in a high-tech version of the afterlife.

However, he soon realizes that this seemingly perfect “heaven” is actually a carefully constructed illusion hiding a disturbing truth. The filmmakers describe the project as a blend of dark satire and philosophical science fiction.

They also note that the tone will be reminiscent of Brazil, known for its absurd and bleak dystopian style.

Artificial Intelligence as a Tool
One of the film’s defining features is the use of AI technology in production. Ex Machina Studios claims its tools can help create large-scale visual worlds while maintaining tighter budget control.

At the same time, the focus remains on traditional filmmaking elements: live actors, a human-written script, and standard production processes. In this case, AI serves as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for the creative team.

A Comeback After a Setback
This project marks an important step for Proyas following the failure of Gods of Egypt, which was released in 2016 and received negative reviews.

The director calls Paradise his “passion project” and emphasizes that bringing such a visually complex and emotionally rich story to life has been a major source of inspiration.

The AI Trend in the Film Industry
Proyas is not alone in exploring new technologies. More filmmakers are turning to artificial intelligence to bring ambitious projects to life.

Among them are Steven Soderbergh, Robert Rodriguez, and Michael Mann, who is reportedly considering neural networks to optimize the budget for a sequel to Heat.

This approach could reshape the industry, opening the door to bolder and more unconventional projects that were previously difficult to finance.

What’s Next
A release date for Paradise has not yet been announced. However, the project is already generating interest thanks to its blend of auteur vision, philosophical storytelling, and technological innovation.

Alex Proyas’ return could become a significant moment for science fiction fans—and prove that even after setbacks, a director can still deliver something truly original.
