Zack Snyder Wasn’t Allowed to Explain Aquaman’s Tattoos

Director Zack Snyder has shared new details about an unrealized version of a film that could have changed how audiences perceived the character.

According to the director, their version would have explored the origins of Arthur Curry in much greater depth. Particular attention was meant to be given to details left unexplained in the final film — including the story behind the character’s distinctive tattoos.

This approach would have introduced a darker, more mythological tone, significantly different from the studio’s final version.

Black Manta and the Justice League Setup
In Snyder’s vision, Black Manta was set to be the central antagonist. Elements of this conflict were intended to be established earlier in Justice League.

Specifically, scenes involving Vulko were meant to serve as a bridge, expanding the underwater world and its internal politics.

Studio Rejected Key Ideas
The rejection of this version of Aquaman was not an isolated case. Snyder also faced pushback from the studio on several other concepts.

Among them were plans to make Steppenwolf the main antagonist in Suicide Squad, as well as setting the events of Wonder Woman during the Crimean War.

Final Film Took a Different Direction
Ultimately, Aquaman, directed by James Wan, followed a lighter and more accessible tone aimed at a broad audience.

This strategy proved successful: the film grossed around $1.1 billion worldwide and received generally positive audience reactions.
