Sony Pictures to Unite Django and Zorro in One Film
Sony Pictures is moving forward with a crossover project based on an idea by Quentin Tarantino.
The studio has officially launched development on Django/Zorro, a film that will unite the hero of Django Unchained with the iconic masked avenger Zorro. The crossover has been discussed in the industry for several years and has now entered active development.
Based on Tarantino’s Comic Book
The screenplay is being written by Brian Helgeland, an Academy Award winner for L.A. Confidential. The film will be based on the 2014 comic book series created by Quentin Tarantino together with Matt Wagner.
This means the project is grounded in an existing story developed by Tarantino himself, although he will not direct the film.
A Story Bringing Two Icons Together
At the center of the story is Django, a former slave turned bounty hunter, who teams up with Zorro in a fight for justice.
The film is expected to blend the tone of a classic western with the energy of an adventure movie, incorporating swordplay and a lighter, more swashbuckling style.
Previously Considered Too Expensive
Attempts to bring the project to life date back to the 2010s, when Jerrod Carmichael was involved in writing an earlier version of the script.
At one point, the film was put on hold due to its projected budget, which was estimated to reach around $500 million.
Antonio Banderas and the Return of Zorro
Actor Antonio Banderas previously revealed that Tarantino had approached him about reprising the role of Zorro.
According to Banderas, the early version of the script featured an unusual tone, combining humor and eccentricity typical of Tarantino’s style.
Tarantino Won’t Direct the Film
Despite originating the idea, Quentin Tarantino will not direct the project. His involvement will be limited to his creative contribution and support.
However, it is expected that his tenth and final film will still be made in collaboration with Sony Pictures.
Release Date Yet to Be Announced
At this stage, production and release dates for Django/Zorro have not been disclosed. The project remains in early development.
Still, the fact that it has been officially launched suggests the studio sees it as a potentially major release in the future.
