Netflix Investing Over $300 Million in The Chronicles of Narnia by Greta Gerwig

Netflix is preparing one of the most ambitious projects in its history, betting big on a large-scale adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

The upcoming film is already attracting major attention not only because of its creative team, but also due to its record-breaking budget, which could redefine the scale of streaming productions.

A Record Budget for Netflix
According to insider reports, the budget for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew has exceeded $320 million. If confirmed, it would become the most expensive project in Netflix history.

Previously, the platform’s biggest-budget production was The Electric State, also reportedly costing around $320 million. It was followed by The Irishman at $225 million, while Red Notice and The Gray Man each carried budgets of roughly $200 million.

The new Narnia adaptation appears set to surpass them all.

Why Netflix Is Spending So Much
The massive investment reflects not only the scale of the story, but also Netflix’s ambition to build a franchise capable of competing with major cinematic universes.

The enormous budget is likely tied to visual effects, large-scale set construction, casting, and the challenge of creating a fully realized fantasy world that meets audience expectations.

However, spending at this level also demands a different financial strategy — something already visible in Netflix’s release plans.

A Surprising Focus on Theaters
Despite its streaming-first identity, Netflix is making an unusual move by giving the film an exclusive theatrical window of 49 days beginning February 12, 2027.

The decision appears highly pragmatic. With a budget exceeding $300 million, subscription revenue alone may not be enough to offset costs. A theatrical release offers the opportunity to recover part of the investment through box office earnings.

At the same time, company executives continue to insist that theatrical exhibition is not the platform’s core business model. Still, in the case of Narnia, financial realities seem to be outweighing previous strategy.

A New Take on a Classic Story
The film will adapt The Magician's Nephew, the prequel story that explores the origins of Narnia.

Interestingly, the adaptation will reportedly shift the setting to the postwar 1950s rather than the Victorian-era backdrop of the original novel.

This change could give the story a more modern tone while preserving the core themes and mythology of Lewis’s work.
