AI Excluded from Oscar Competition as the Academy Tightens Award Rules

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced major changes to its rules, revising how films and creators qualify for the world’s most prestigious film awards.

The reform affects several key categories and is directly tied to the growing use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry.

Screenplays Must Be Written by Humans
One of the most significant changes concerns screenwriting eligibility. From now on, only scripts written by humans will qualify for Oscar consideration.

The Academy clarified that this is not merely about formal authorship, but about genuine human involvement in the creative process. Screenplays fully or substantially generated by AI will be excluded from competition.

With this decision, the Academy is emphasizing the importance of human creativity and original artistic contribution.

Acting Categories Reject Digital Replacements
The new rules also affect acting categories. Only performances carried out by real actors with their explicit consent will now be eligible for awards.

The measure is aimed at limiting the use of digital doubles, AI-generated likenesses, and other technologies capable of replicating or replacing human performances.

The Academy stressed that eligibility requires both the actor’s physical participation and legally confirmed permission for the use of their image.

In doing so, the organization reinforces the idea that acting awards should recognize human performance rather than technological simulation.

AI Still Allowed — But with Limits
Despite the stricter rules, AI technology is not being completely banned from filmmaking.

Artificial intelligence can still be used in post-production for tasks such as visual effects, editing, and image enhancement. However, these tools cannot become the primary creative force behind projects competing in major categories.

Expanded Opportunities for International Films
Alongside the restrictions, the Academy also broadened eligibility pathways for international productions.

Films that receive recognition at major international film festivals across Europe, Asia, and the Americas will now have expanded opportunities to qualify for Oscar consideration.

The move is intended to make the awards more globally inclusive while increasing competition among international filmmakers.

The Industry Responds to a Technological Shift
The updated rules reflect the Academy’s attempt to preserve the value of human artistic involvement as AI rapidly becomes more integrated into film production.

As artificial intelligence continues reshaping the entertainment industry, these measures appear designed to draw a clearer line between creative tools and creative authorship — ensuring that artistic recognition remains centered on human creators.
