Taylor Sheridan Criticises Hollywood Executives and Marvel Studios Films
Taylor Sheridan has stated that the success of his projects became possible largely because he refused to follow the demands of studio executives. In his view, modern Hollywood increasingly prevents creators from telling powerful stories.
The creator of one of television’s most successful franchises in recent years shared his views during an interview on Bill Simmons’ podcast, where he spoke candidly about the current state of the entertainment industry. The writer, director and producer revealed that he intentionally built his career by rejecting traditional Hollywood rules, choosing not to shape his work around the opinions of studio executives, critics or major awards.
According to Sheridan, a storyteller’s primary responsibility should always be the story itself—not satisfying layers of approval processes or marketing expectations.
Why Sheridan Distrusts Studio Executives
During the conversation, Sheridan argued that many modern studio executives have little real understanding of storytelling. In his opinion, a large number of decision-makers enter the industry from marketing or legal backgrounds and end up making creative decisions without the necessary experience in narrative development.
He explained that this often results in excessive control over scripts. Writers are expected to thoroughly explain character motivations, detail backstories and justify every plot point before production even begins. Sheridan believes this process often replaces natural storytelling with endless meetings and revisions.
He also emphasised his commitment to classic filmmaking principles, where action drives the story and dialogue reveals character and emotion, rather than becoming a tool for constant exposition.
Working with Paramount on His Own Terms
Speaking about his partnership with Paramount, Sheridan said he made his conditions clear from the beginning. He has no interest in working under a system where every creative decision requires approval from multiple layers of management.
The filmmaker stressed that his goal is to create stories for mainstream audiences, not to win over critics or awards juries. Because of that, he says he remains unfazed by negative reviews and often makes choices he knows will spark debate.
As an example, he referenced the series Landman. Sheridan admitted he fully expected critics to complain about Demi Moore having limited screen time in the first season. However, he explained this was a deliberate storytelling decision, as her character was always meant to become more important after her husband’s death.
Criticism of Marvel and Modern Cinema
Sheridan was equally critical of the modern superhero industry. According to him, many Marvel Studios films are overloaded with exposition, fictional universe details and interconnected plotlines, forcing audiences to process excessive information instead of simply engaging with the story.
He also reflected on Hollywood in previous decades, describing it as tougher but far more efficient creatively. According to Sheridan, filmmakers back then did not spend months discussing “tone” or sitting through endless meetings—they focused on making movies.
Despite his scepticism toward awards, Taylor Sheridan’s projects continue to attract strong attention from both audiences and the industry. This year, two of his series, The Madison and Landman, are expected to be submitted for Primetime Emmy Awards consideration, further cementing his influence on modern television.
