Extended Cut of *Behind the Reality* Set for Release on Independence Day Weekend in the United States
A24 is preparing to bring one of the year’s biggest horror hits back to theatres with an extended version featuring new scenes and an additional post-credits sequence.
The unexpected success of the horror film Behind the Reality has inspired A24 to re-release the movie in cinemas. From July 3, audiences will be able to watch a special version titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition, timed around the US Independence Day celebrations. Along with an extended runtime, fans can expect new material that was not previously shown in theatres.
What Will Change in the New Version
According to information published by AMC Theatres, the updated cut will be around 15 minutes longer than the original film. The total runtime will be two hours and six minutes.
The main addition will be an exclusive post-credits scene featuring previously unseen material directed by Kane Parsons. The studio has not yet revealed how closely the new sequence connects to the main story, but fans are already speculating that it may include hints at a possible sequel or a wider cinematic universe.
Kane Parsons — A New Name in Modern Horror
One of the biggest reasons behind the project’s appeal is its creator. Kane Parsons has become one of the youngest filmmakers to make a major impact in Hollywood. As a teenager, he gained wide recognition through a series of atmospheric short films centred on mysterious “liminal spaces”. These videos attracted millions of viewers online and caught the attention of major film studios.
The feature-length Behind the Reality became the 20-year-old director’s first major Hollywood project. The film’s success proved that ideas born from internet culture can connect with mainstream audiences and become the foundation for commercially successful cinema.
One of the Year’s Most Profitable Films
Behind the Reality has become a major triumph for A24. Made on a production budget of around $10 million, the film has earned more than $330 million worldwide, setting a new box office record for the company. It has also become one of the year’s most profitable films, recouping its investment many times over.
The story follows a furniture store owner, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who discovers an endless system of mysterious rooms in the building’s basement, known as liminal spaces. Gradually, his exploration of this strange world turns into a dangerous psychological ordeal, blurring the line between reality and nightmare. Alongside Ejiofor, the film also stars Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell.
Despite the film’s massive commercial success, A24 has not yet commented on the possibility of a sequel or franchise expansion. However, the release of the extended edition clearly shows that interest in the film remains high, and the studio intends to make the most of one of its most successful projects in recent years.
