Joe Eszterhas Explains Why He Never Worked on the Sequel to Basic Instinct

Joe Eszterhas, the writer behind the iconic erotic thriller Basic Instinct, has made a surprising revelation about the film’s sequel. According to him, the studio paid him a substantial sum simply to stay away from the project.

The story behind one of the most talked-about films of the 1990s has once again come into the spotlight. Eszterhas revealed that he received $1.5 million from the studio in exchange for not working on Basic Instinct 2. The screenwriter said he was never officially told why, but believes the producers deliberately chose to move away from his creative vision.

"They Paid Me to Stay Away"

In a recent interview, the 81-year-old writer admitted that it was one of the easiest paychecks of his career.

According to Eszterhas, the filmmakers behind the sequel had no interest in recreating the bold style that made the original film famous. Instead of embracing its provocative storytelling, tension and controversial atmosphere, he believes the sequel became little more than a conventional detective thriller.

He was particularly critical of the 2006 film, arguing that moving the story to London stripped away the humour, suspense, boldness and unique energy that turned the original into a worldwide hit.

The Writer Is Open to Returning

Despite his disappointment with the sequel, Eszterhas says he has not ruled out returning to the franchise. He confirmed that he has agreed to take part in developing a new reboot and has already presented producers with his own vision for the project.

According to the writer, he has watched numerous attempts to revive Basic Instinct over the past decades and believes audience interest in the franchise has never truly faded. That, he says, gives a new version every chance of appealing to both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.

Controversy Was Always Part of the Formula

Eszterhas insists that a new Basic Instinct cannot succeed without preserving the provocative spirit that defined the original. He believes any reboot should be controversial enough to spark public debate.

He recalled that even before the 1992 film premiered, it was surrounded by major controversy. Protest demonstrations took place in New York and Los Angeles months before its release, while the ongoing public debate only increased audience curiosity. In his view, that atmosphere played a significant role in the film's extraordinary commercial success.

A Thriller That Still Defines the Genre

Released in 1992, Basic Instinct remains one of the most influential erotic thrillers ever made. The film became a major box office success and left a lasting impact on the genre, while Sharon Stone’s portrayal of Catherine Tramell became one of the most iconic performances in cinematic history.

More than three decades after its release, discussions about a potential reboot have once again reignited interest in the franchise. If the new project moves forward, audiences will soon find out whether its creators can recapture the boldness and provocative edge that made the original a true classic.
