Moana Starring Dwayne Johnson Opens Well Below Expectations
Disney's live-action adaptation of Moana has opened with box office results that fell well short of both studio and industry expectations.
The film's first box office figures have raised concerns. Despite the strength of the Moana brand, the return of Dwayne Johnson and an extensive marketing campaign, the remake failed to attract the audience many had anticipated. Its long-term success will now largely depend on whether it can maintain strong family attendance in the weeks ahead.
A Weaker-Than-Expected Debut
On its opening day in North America, including Thursday preview screenings, Moana earned approximately $18 million. Current projections estimate an opening weekend of around $45 million.
That figure falls well below the studio's original expectations. Industry analysts had initially forecast an opening above $60 million, with the most optimistic estimates reaching as high as $75 million. For a film released on nearly 4,000 screens across North America, the performance is widely viewed as underwhelming.
A Massive Budget Raises the Stakes
The film's high production cost only adds to the pressure. According to industry reports, Disney spent approximately $250 million on the film before marketing expenses.
With such a large budget, the movie will need exceptionally strong worldwide earnings to approach profitability. While critics have been divided, audiences have responded more positively, awarding the film an A− CinemaScore. That could help sustain its theatrical run if positive word of mouth proves stronger than the mixed critical reception.
Compared to the Animated Films
The live-action remake has inevitably been compared with the original Moana. Released in 2016, the animated feature earned $82 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend before finishing its run with $643 million worldwide.
Its sequel performed even better. Moana 2, originally developed as a Disney+ series before becoming a theatrical release, debuted with $225 million over the same holiday period and eventually surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.
Why the Remake Faces an Uphill Battle
Analysts believe one reason for the muted audience response is the relatively short gap between the release of the animated sequel and the live-action remake. With the recent animated film still fresh in audiences' minds, many viewers appear to see the remake as a retelling of a familiar story rather than a major new cinematic event.
The key question now is whether Moana can demonstrate strong staying power over the coming weeks. If family audiences continue to support the film through positive word of mouth, it may still improve its commercial outlook. However, the disappointing opening has significantly reduced its margin for error, making the weeks ahead crucial to the film's box office future.
