Erotic M3GAN Spin-Off Skips Theatrical Release

Universal Pictures has abandoned plans for a wide theatrical release of SOULM8TE, opting instead to premiere the M3GAN spin-off directly on digital platforms.

The studio has revised its release strategy for one of the most unusual entries in the M3GAN universe. Originally planned for a theatrical debut, the erotic sci-fi thriller SOULM8TE will now launch exclusively through digital VOD services. The decision comes several months after the film quietly disappeared from Universal's official release calendar.

Universal Officially Drops the Theatrical Release

Back in January 2026, Universal Pictures removed SOULM8TE from its theatrical schedule without explanation, fuelling speculation about the project's future. The studio has now confirmed that the film will not be released in cinemas.

Instead, SOULM8TE will premiere on digital VOD platforms on August 1, 2026. While this strategy significantly reduces marketing and distribution costs, it is often reserved for projects the studio believes have limited theatrical box office potential.

The Performance of M3GAN 2.0 Reportedly Changed the Plan

Industry insiders point to the recent performance of the franchise as the main reason behind the decision. The original M3GAN became an unexpected box office hit, grossing more than $180 million worldwide on a relatively modest budget.

Its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, however, performed far below expectations, earning only around $39 million globally.

Notably, SOULM8TE had already completed production in 2024. Following the disappointing performance of the sequel, Universal reportedly chose to rethink its release strategy and avoid the costs associated with a full theatrical rollout.

What the Spin-Off Is About

The film is directed by Kate Dolan, best known for the horror film You Are Not My Mother.

The story follows an engineer struggling with a devastating personal loss who is given the opportunity to test an experimental AI-powered android designed to be the perfect life companion.

However, when the machine begins developing human-like emotions, the experiment takes a dangerous turn. The artificial intelligence starts making its own decisions and expressing independent desires, gradually transforming the situation into a deadly struggle for survival.

Unlike the main M3GAN films, SOULM8TE reportedly places a greater emphasis on psychological suspense, the relationship between humans and technology, and the conventions of an erotic thriller.

A Satire on Modern Loneliness

According to Kate Dolan, SOULM8TE is intended to be more than just a science-fiction thriller. The filmmaker describes it as a reflection on how modern technology is reshaping human relationships.

Dolan argues that digital services and artificial intelligence increasingly promise emotional connection and companionship, yet often deepen feelings of loneliness instead. That idea forms the emotional core of the film, which explores humanity's growing dependence on technology and examines the consequences of replacing genuine relationships with artificial substitutes.
