Elon Musk Wants Mel Gibson to Direct a “Historically Accurate” Adaptation of The Odyssey

Billionaire Elon Musk has expressed interest in financing a new adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, reportedly with a budget of $100 million.

While Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continues to dominate cinemas worldwide, another ambitious take on Homer's legendary epic may be on the horizon. Musk says he would like to see an alternative adaptation that remains as faithful as possible to both the historical period and the original poem.

Musk Criticises Nolan's Approach and Pitches His Own Vision

Musk has previously voiced criticism of Christopher Nolan's adaptation, claiming the filmmaker had strayed from the original spirit of Homer's work. Now, the tech entrepreneur has gone a step further by outlining his own vision for the epic.

On social media, Musk shared an AI-generated concept video created using Grok, accompanied by a statement expressing his desire to produce a feature-length version of The Odyssey that would be "historically accurate and faithful to the spirit of Homer."

For now, the project remains only a concept, but the announcement has attracted significant attention, particularly because Musk has repeatedly spoken about using artificial intelligence to transform the entertainment industry.

Mel Gibson Emerges as Musk's Preferred Director

According to publicly available reports, Musk believes Mel Gibson would be the ideal choice to direct his version of The Odyssey. He is reportedly considering investing around $100 million to bring the project to life under Gibson's leadership.

The film's defining goal would be historical authenticity. Musk reportedly wants accurate depictions of ancient ships, armour and weapons, as well as a cast that reflects the historical setting.

He has also suggested that the dialogue should be drawn directly from Homer's original text and performed in the form of Ancient Greek associated with the epic.

Gibson's Filmmaking Experience Fits the Vision

Mel Gibson's directing career makes him a natural candidate for such an ambitious historical production. His films are known for their attention to historical atmosphere, large-scale battle sequences and linguistic authenticity.

In Braveheart, Gibson recreated medieval Scotland, while Apocalypto was filmed using indigenous Mesoamerican languages to portray the Mayan civilisation. The Passion of the Christ likewise featured dialogue in ancient languages, including Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew.

However, the proposed adaptation remains far from certain. Gibson is currently focused on completing his two-part sequel to The Passion of the Christ, with the films expected to be released in 2027 and 2028.
