Artificial Intelligence to De-Age Characters in *The Lord of the Rings* Prequel
Director Andy Serkis has confirmed that artificial intelligence technology will be used in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. However, he stressed that AI will serve only as a visual effects tool and will not replace actors' performances.
Since the film was announced, fans of The Lord of the Rings have wondered how familiar characters would return to the screen, given that the story takes place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Serkis has now officially confirmed that AI-assisted de-aging technology will be used to make that possible.
AI Will Help Recreate Younger Versions of Familiar Characters
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set in the years between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, allowing iconic characters such as Gandalf and Frodo to return.
To maintain continuity with the original cast, the filmmakers plan to use digital de-aging technology. According to Serkis, artificial intelligence will make the process more accurate and natural while working alongside traditional visual effects techniques rather than replacing them.
Serkis: AI Is Not a Substitute for Acting
Serkis emphasized that AI can only be used with the explicit permission of the actors whose likenesses are involved. He described the technology as another tool for visual effects artists, not something capable of replacing human performances.
In his view, this approach respects actors' work while giving filmmakers additional creative possibilities.
Peter Jackson Shares the Same View
Producer Peter Jackson has previously expressed a similar opinion. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, he said artificial intelligence should be seen as another tool in a filmmaker's creative toolkit rather than a revolutionary technology that could replace the craft itself.
Jackson believes AI should help bring creative ideas to life while ensuring that people remain at the centre of the filmmaking process.
Orlando Bloom Revealed the Plan First
Interestingly, Orlando Bloom was the first to hint that the production intended to use AI.
The actor recalled asking Serkis how the team planned to make returning characters appear younger. According to Bloom, the director's answer was simple: "Artificial intelligence."
Based on the filmmakers' comments, AI will be used selectively as part of a broader visual effects pipeline, helping preserve the iconic appearance of beloved characters while ensuring they match the timeline of the new story.
