Ed Harris' Concerns About Dutton Ranch Have Been Heard as His Character Takes Center Stage in Season 2

The creators of Taylor Sheridan's Dutton Ranch have reportedly responded to Ed Harris' public criticism of the show's first season by giving his character a much larger role in Season 2.

According to industry sources, both 101 Studios and Paramount Television Studios have taken Harris' concerns into account, with Everett McKinney set to become one of the central figures in the upcoming season.

Production on the Yellowstone spin-off is currently in pre-production, with filming expected to begin on 15 January 2027. Harris is set to reprise his role and is also said to be involved in discussions about his character's future storyline.

Everett McKinney Will Take Center Stage

Insiders claim that Season 2 will significantly expand Everett McKinney's story arc. While Harris reportedly felt that his character was pushed to the sidelines during the first season, the new episodes are expected to place him much closer to the heart of the narrative.

Harris' contract reportedly covers at least two seasons, with an option for a third, and he is now said to have greater creative input into the direction of his character.

The move is widely seen as an effort to repair relations between the actor and the production team following his public criticism of the first season.

New Showrunner Signals a Creative Shift

One of the biggest changes behind the scenes is the appointment of a new showrunner. Benjamin Cavell has taken over from Chad Feehan, who led the first season.

Industry rumours suggest Harris' dissatisfaction may have played a role in the creative overhaul, with reports claiming the actor was consulted during the search for a new showrunner.

Neither studio has officially linked the leadership change to Harris' complaints, but the timing has fuelled speculation that the two developments are connected.

Harris Felt the Role Wasn't What He Was Promised

Earlier, Harris openly expressed disappointment with his experience on Dutton Ranch. According to the actor, Everett McKinney was originally presented to him as one of the series' leading characters with a substantial dramatic arc.

However, as production progressed, Harris felt that the role received far less screen time than expected and became significantly less important to the overall story.

He admitted that he even considered leaving the project and urged his representatives to seek changes to his agreement.

One of his biggest frustrations was the removal of a scene in which Everett performed a song in a bar. Harris believed the sequence would have added important emotional depth to the character, but it was ultimately cut to preserve the overall tone of the series.

Season 2 Aims to Win Back Audiences

Despite his frustrations during production, Harris later praised the finished season, acknowledging that the series itself was well made and that Everett still played a meaningful role in the story.

Now, the creative team faces the challenge of proving that the actor's concerns were genuinely addressed.
